In a recent gathering at Mennaye Field in Penzance, the Bolingey Barbarians celebrated a dual victory: a thrilling rugby match and a successful charity drive. The Cornish Pirates’ 41-17 win over Nottingham was not the only highlight of the day; the Barbarians also raised nearly £800 for children’s charities in Cornwall.

Roger Mead BEM, the Chairman of Bolingey Barbarians, expressed his satisfaction with both the rugby match and the charity collection. He described the game as a high-scoring spectacle, with both teams grappling with blustery conditions and engaging in a mix of strategic plays. This exciting match provided a perfect backdrop for the Barbarians’ charitable efforts.

The Bolingey Barbarians, known for their commitment to supporting children’s charities, received generous donations during the match. Their successful collection was a testament to the kindness of the rugby community.

In addition to the game and fundraising achievements, Roger Mead took the opportunity to extend congratulations to Sir Richard ‘Dicky’ Evans, the owner of Cornish Pirates, on his recent knighthood in the New Year Honours. Mead also expressed gratitude towards the club’s Media Liaison Officer, Phil Westren, for his longstanding support of the Barbarians. In recognition of his efforts, Westren was named an ‘Honorary Barbarian’ and gifted a symbolic black and gold tie.

Phil Westren, caught by surprise by this honour, expressed his deep appreciation for the gesture. He commended the Bolingey Barbarians for being a unique and dedicated group, contributing significantly to charitable causes through their ongoing efforts in the rugby community.

The Bolingey Barbarians continue to make a positive impact, both on and off the rugby field, through their passionate support of children’s charities and their active engagement in the rugby community.
