Major Upgrade on Penryn’s Sewers Nears Completion: Find Out What’s Changing

Published On: 16 April 2024Last Updated: 16 April 2024By

After months of intensive construction and upgrades, South West Water has announced the near completion of the main phase of the sewer replacement project on Commercial Road, Penryn.

This £850,000 project is part of a broader effort to enhance sewer performance and environmental protection across the South West.

Essential Upgrades to Combat Ageing Infrastructure

Since January, South West Water has been focused on replacing the old sewer system, which had become susceptible to frequent bursts. The use of modern pipework and relining techniques not only reinforces the system but also significantly diminishes the likelihood of future disruptions.

Techniques and Progress

The innovative relining technique employed involves creating a new, robust pipe within the existing structure, ensuring a fast and efficient enhancement with minimal environmental impact. This method extends the life of the sewer network without the need for extensive excavation.

Remaining Works and Community Impact

While the bulk of the work on Commercial Road is complete, final touches on Penryn Bridge and nearby connections will continue once sewer levels stabilise, particularly after this year’s unusually high rainfall.

South West Water has committed to maintaining clear and open communication with Penryn’s residents and businesses as these works conclude. A dedicated Customer Liaison Officer will be on-site to provide updates and address any concerns during the final stages of the project.

Ed Mitchell, the project manager, expressed his apologies for the inconvenience caused during the construction. He assured that these upgrades would provide long-term benefits to the community, emphasizing the importance of the improvements.

“We will need to return to complete the final work over the bridge as soon as conditions allow. We are dedicated to completing this swiftly and will keep the community informed on when we expect to finalise the project,” said Ed.

Looking Forward

Completion of these essential upgrades will not only prevent future problems but also enhance the quality of life for the residents of Penryn. With the major phase completed, South West Water looks forward to wrapping up the entire project, signalling a significant improvement in local infrastructure resilience and environmental safeguarding.
