Discover How South West Water is Inspiring Young Minds to Save H2O
In a remarkable effort to instil the importance of water conservation from a young age, South West Water has been making waves across Devon and Cornwall.
Sophie Moore, the Community Engagement Officer, has been at the forefront of this educational campaign, reaching over 4,000 primary school pupils in the past year through interactive and informative sessions designed to spark a lifelong commitment to preserving this essential resource.
Engaging Young Learners
Sophie’s workshops are brimming with fun activities and crucial information about the water cycle, the journey of drinking water, and the significance of wastewater treatment. These sessions are broken down into five thematic categories: water efficiency, drinking water quality, wastewater management, environmental impact, and personal wellbeing. Each lesson is crafted to not only educate but also empower students with the knowledge they need to make impactful changes at home.
Practical Tips for Everyday Conservation
During her visits, Sophie provides practical advice on simple actions children can take to conserve water. A standout tip includes turning off the tap while brushing teeth, which can save approximately 8,760 litres of water per person annually. These small yet significant behavioural adjustments at home are supported by South West Water’s proactive measures to reduce water loss, such as enhancing leak detection and repair, wherein specially trained dogs play a crucial role in identifying leaks in challenging areas.
Enthusiastic Feedback from Educators
The impact of these sessions is evident from the enthusiastic responses from teachers and students alike. A teacher from Cornerstone Academy Trust highlighted the positive buzz and inspiration that Sophie’s visit brought to their students, particularly enhancing their environmental projects and understanding of the water cycle in year four studies. The educator expressed a keen interest in welcoming Sophie back for future sessions.
A Rewarding Experience
Sophie commented on her role, “I love my job. It allows me to travel across the region and teach the future generations all about water and how it’s a precious resource we all use every day. Being able to help educate children is truly rewarding when I get to see them listening, learning, and engaging in my lessons.”
The drive and enthusiasm of young students to take this knowledge home and implement it shows the far-reaching benefits of educating them on such fundamental topics.
