Cornwall and Devon’s Two Largest Reservoirs Reach 90% Storage Capacity Ahead of Schedule
In a significant development for water security in the South West, Devon and Cornwall’s two largest strategic reservoirs have achieved over 90% storage capacity well ahead of the target date.
This milestone is part of South West Water’s comprehensive plan to enhance the long-term resilience of the region’s water supply.
Record-Level Investment and Community Effort Pays Off
Roadford Reservoir and Colliford Reservoir, the cornerstones of water storage in the South West, have seen their levels rise dramatically, thanks to an unprecedented investment exceeding £125 million. This funding aimed to boost water resources by 30% and 45% in Devon and Cornwall respectively, has been coupled with the effects of substantial rainfall and concerted efforts by customers to conserve water.
This achievement marks a stark contrast to the same period last year, when Roadford and Colliford reservoirs recorded levels of 63% and 55% respectively. Now, these crucial water sources stand at 100% and 96% capacity, showcasing the effectiveness of the strategies implemented by South West Water.
Breaking the Drought Cycle
The fulfilment of these targets comes as a part of South West Water’s broader vision to ensure the South West can overcome the drought cycle that has plagued it, particularly after 2022’s record-breaking dry and hot conditions. With a focus on providing a reliable water supply to its 1.8 million residents and the annual influx of 10 million visitors, the company announced its goal to reach 90% storage in both reservoirs by 1 April 2024.
David Harris, the company’s Drought and Resilience Director, highlighted the crucial role of climate adaptation measures and community efforts in achieving these results. “In 2022, we witnessed firsthand the impacts of climate change,” he stated. “Our concerted efforts since then have not only helped us rebound from historic lows but have also set a precedent for managing water resources amidst growing climate challenges.”
Future-Focused Water Management
The progress in Devon and Cornwall is part of a larger scheme to enhance water security across the region. The introduction of desalination in Par and a new water treatment works in Porth are significant steps toward completing the resilience plans in Cornwall, with 70% of these projects already finished.
Further, South West Water’s investment extends to the completion of construction work at Blackpool Pit, now one of four repurposed quarries aiding water resource improvement in Cornwall. Additionally, in Devon, initiatives like the winter pump storage work at Gatherley and the Lyd pumping scheme are operational, supporting water resource enhancements.
Looking ahead, South West Water’s Water Resources Management Plan is prepared to ensure a secure, sufficient, and safe water supply for the next 25 years. This long-term strategy not only focuses on meeting human water needs but also emphasises the protection and flourishing of the local environment and wildlife.
In summary, the successful refilling of Devon and Cornwall’s largest reservoirs represents a significant step forward in South West Water’s ongoing efforts to secure a sustainable water future for the region. Through record investments, strategic planning, and community participation, South West Water is laying the groundwork for resilience against climate variability and ensuring the well-being of both its human and ecological communities.
