Saltash Leisure Centre Set for Major Transformation – Here’s What’s Changing

Published On: 31 January 2025Last Updated: 31 January 2025By

Saltash Leisure Centre is set to undergo a significant transformation, becoming Cornwall’s first multi-purpose community hub. The redevelopment, announced by Cornwall Council and GLL, the not-for-profit social enterprise operating the centre under the Better brand, aims to safeguard its future while expanding its services.

A New Future for Saltash Leisure Centre

The leisure centre, which faced an uncertain future following the pandemic, has seen a resurgence in recent years. Increased school and club usage, rising membership numbers, and new health and fitness programmes have strengthened its role in the community. A new café and partnerships with local health providers have also been introduced.

Now, a phased refurbishment will bring even more services under one roof. By the end of the year, the upgraded facility will feature refurbished changing rooms, a local registrar service, a safe and well hub, and an operational base for Cornwall Council staff and officers.

Work to Start in Late Spring

The redevelopment will begin in late spring and be carried out in stages to minimise disruption. The leisure centre will remain open throughout the works, with customers kept informed on progress.

James Curry, Head of Service for GLL in Cornwall, welcomed the plans, stating:

“We are delighted to be working with our key partner, Cornwall Council, on this exciting new development which will result in a range of community services being brought under one roof.

“In a rural area like Cornwall, a community hub such as this will maximise cost efficiency, ensure greater sustainability and increase the likelihood of more people benefiting from all that a community facility offers.

“This model is the first of its kind in Cornwall and will give Saltash Leisure Centre a new lease of life.

“A lot of work has gone into this project and we’re very grateful for continued local support.”

Cornwall Council’s portfolio holder for Neighbourhoods, Carol Mould, added:

“I am really pleased that works will soon start on this exciting project.

“This is a new and innovative model that will help safeguard the future of the leisure centre and provide better access to vital services for people in the Saltash area.”

With work set to begin in just a few months, Saltash residents can look forward to a modernised facility designed to serve the community for years to come.
