Storm Éowyn: RNLI Issues Urgent Warning as 90mph Winds Loom

Published On: 23 January 2025Last Updated: 23 January 2025By

As Storm Éowyn approaches the UK, bringing strong winds and heavy rain, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is urging the public to exercise extreme caution near the coast. The storm is expected to create dangerous conditions, particularly along exposed cliffs, seafronts, and piers, posing a significant safety risk.

Weather Warnings in Place

The Met Office has issued yellow and amber weather warnings for wind and rain from Thursday to Saturday, with winds reaching 50 to 60mph tomorrow along the western and southern coasts of Wales and England. Gusts could increase to 60 to 70mph in coastal areas.

On Friday, the situation is set to escalate, with strong winds spreading across the UK. Amber warnings have been extended to cover much of the country, including Northern Ireland, where gusts may peak at a terrifying 90mph along exposed cliffs. Heavy rain is also forecast for south-west England.

For Scotland and parts of northern England, a separate yellow warning highlights the continued risk from strong winds.

RNLI’s Advice for Staying Safe

The RNLI’s South East Regional Water Safety Manager, Guy Addington, emphasised the importance of vigilance, stating:

“Storm Éowyn is set to bring potentially dangerous and uncertain conditions so we’re asking the public to stay vigilant.”

For those venturing near the coast, the RNLI advises:

  • Stay well back from stormy seas and cliff edges.
  • Check the weather forecast and tide times before heading out.
  • Take a phone with you.
  • In an emergency, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

What to Do in an Emergency

The RNLI is also reminding the public of their life-saving guidance:

  • If caught unexpectedly in the water, Float to Live:
Lie back, extend your arms and legs, and relax until you regain control of your breathing.
  • If you spot someone in danger, call 999 or 112 immediately and ask for the Coastguard.
  • If you have a floatation device nearby, throw it to the person, but do not enter the water yourself.

Don’t Risk Your Life

The RNLI is warning that the strong winds and heavy rain brought by Storm Éowyn could create perilous conditions along the coast. Addington cautioned:

“If you plan to visit the coast, the RNLI advises that you stay a safe distance from the water as conditions could knock you off your feet or wash you into the sea. It is not worth risking your life.”

As the storm takes hold, it is crucial to prioritise safety and heed the advice of professionals. Stormy seas are mesmerising but can be deadly – a risk not worth taking.
