RNLI Named Charity of the Year for 2024 Royal Cornwall Show
The RNLI is thrilled to be named as the charity of the year for the 2024 Royal Cornwall Show, coinciding with the organisation’s 200th anniversary.
This honour marks a significant milestone for the RNLI, which has dedicated two centuries to saving lives at sea.
Founded on 4 March 1824 in a London tavern, following an appeal from Sir William Hillary, the RNLI has weathered numerous challenges, including tragic disasters, funding shortages, and two World Wars. The charity’s commitment to lifesaving has remained steadfast, evolving to save more lives in more ways across the UK and Ireland.
Lifesaving Legacy in Cornwall
In Cornwall, the RNLI has a long-standing presence, operating 14 lifeboat stations and providing lifeguard services across 58 beaches during peak season. Since its inception, the RNLI has saved 146,452 lives nationwide, with Cornwall alone accounting for 6,478 of those rescues. Additionally, RNLI lifeguards in Cornwall have responded to 128,366 incidents, saving 793 lives since 2001.
Engaging the Community at the Royal Cornwall Show
The RNLI will have a prominent presence at the Royal Cornwall Show, taking place from Thursday, 6 June to Saturday, 8 June. Visitors can find the RNLI stand where the charity will be fundraising, spreading awareness about their work, and offering essential water safety advice. The RNLI will also perform water safety demonstrations in the countryside area.
A central display in the flower tent will feature a competition for local schools to create hanging basket flower arrangements using decommissioned lifeboat helmets and floral wellies. Additionally, RNLI200 branded clothing and accessories will be available for purchase throughout the event.
A Message from Adrian Carey
Adrian Carey, RNLI Head of Region for the South West, expressed the charity’s excitement about being featured at the show. He highlighted the significance of the event for the local community and its alignment with the RNLI’s mission.
“The RNLI is delighted to have been selected as the charity of the year at the 2024 Royal Cornwall Show, especially in our 200th anniversary year. The show is an annual highlight for the local community and, like the RNLI, plays an important role in Cornish life,” said Adrian.
Adrian also emphasised the importance of the event for showcasing the RNLI’s lifesaving efforts and inspiring new supporters. “The show gives us the opportunity to shine a light on the fantastic work our lifesavers do across Cornwall, as well as inspire new people to get involved. We look forward to meeting supporters old and new across the three days.”
