Daring Rescues and a Whale Saved by RNLI Penlee Lifeboat Crew

In a series of remarkable rescue operations on the 31st of March, 2024, the RNLI Penlee lifeboat team demonstrated exceptional bravery and skill in Cornwall’s treacherous waters. Amidst their duties, they accomplished an unexpected act of marine conservation.

The day’s first call to action came at 14:34, when Falmouth Coastguards alerted the RNLI Penlee to a paddle boarder struggling in rough seas off Rinsey Point. The B class Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat, named Mollie and Ivor Dent, was promptly launched under the skilled leadership of helm Will. Remarkably, within six minutes, the volunteer crew of four made haste across the bay. Upon arrival, they found the paddle boarder had managed to reach safety without assistance.

Earlier in the day, at 12:11, a distress signal from a 36-foot yacht in peril south of Gwennap Head had already set the team into motion. The all-weather Severn Class Lifeboat Ivan Ellen, with a crew of six led by coxswain Patch, was dispatched. Despite sailing and engine difficulties faced by the yacht, the crew ensured its safe tow to Newlyn harbour by 15:40. The operations were challenged by cloudy skies, a force 6 easterly wind, and rough seas, testing the crew’s resolve and proficiency.

A Fortuitous Whale Rescue

The journey back from the paddle boarder’s location presented an unforeseen challenge — a humpback whale entangled in fisherman’s ropes. Displaying remarkable composure and expertise, Will manoeuvred the lifeboat close enough to cut the ropes ensnaring the whale. A final thrash of its tail freed the majestic creature from its binds, a moment of joy and relief for the crew.

Preparedness for the Next Call

Following the day’s events, both lifeboats were readied for future rescues, exemplifying the crew’s dedication to their roles. The team’s actions were captured in photographs showing the Mollie and Ivor Dent with her crew upon their return to Newlyn, alongside images of the yacht under tow by Ivan Ellen. A photograph of the liberated whale was also shared, symbolising the unexpected yet heartwarming rescue that occurred amidst the day’s duties.

The RNLI Penlee’s efforts not only saved human lives but also demonstrated a commendable commitment to marine conservation. Their swift responses and skilled manoeuvres during these operations reflect the bravery and readiness that define the RNLI’s mission to save lives at sea.
