Support for local charities, shared laughter, and a taste of tradition were all on the menu at Redruth’s latest Oddfellows gathering.

Redruth’s Oddfellows Celebrate Friendship Month

A well-attended gathering of the Oddfellows Friendship Group in Redruth brought together members for a day filled with support, tradition, and charitable giving, marking September’s ‘Friendship Month’. The event, held recently, provided an opportunity for attendees to experience what being an Oddfellow is all about.

The event began with a presentation by the local Oddfellows welfare representative, outlining the society’s extensive support services. Members in need are able to access a range of assistance including dental, optical, and emergency financial grants, as well as a citizens advice phone line, and legal services.

Traditional Hevva Cake Takes Centre Stage

Following the presentation, the gathering took a local turn with a humorous talk on baking traditional Cornish Hevva Cake. The recipe, passed down through generations of a Redruth family, became a highlight of the event, especially when large slices of the cake, freshly baked by a member, were served with tea, coffee, chocolate biscuits, and fresh fruit.

Charity Raffle Supports Local Causes

The event also featured a raffle, with items handcrafted by members up for grabs. Proceeds from the raffle were donated to a special fund used to support local and other charitable causes. During the event, a message of thanks was read out for donations made towards the annual ‘Link to Hope Shoebox Appeal’, an initiative providing practical and financial assistance.

In addition, a decision was made to allocate a small grant to the ‘Hedgepigs and Hoglets Rescue’, a local charity in Penzance dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating hedgehogs and other small wild mammals. Thanks to matched funding and tax relief, the charity received £125 to support its important work.

Fun and Games Conclude the Afternoon

The gathering concluded with a lively beetle drive, followed by the distribution of takeaway quiz sheets. Members were also treated to free books from the book club and sweets to take home.

The Oddfellows, founded in 1810, regularly hold meetings in Redruth, Plymouth, Truro, and other locations. The society continues to welcome new members of all ages and genders, encouraging individuals to join their friendly community.
