Oddfellows Friendship Group’s Exciting Visit to Kresen Kernow
Members of the Oddfellows Friendship Group in Redruth recently enjoyed an engaging afternoon visit to Kresen Kernow, The Cornish Archive Centre and Library.
This local group, known for its community spirit, took the opportunity to delve into the rich history preserved at the site, formerly known as the Redruth Brewery.
Upon arrival, each member received a presentation pack detailing the history of the centre and the extensive work of the modern archive and library. Attendees had the chance to explore interactive displays and view rare treasures housed in the specially air-conditioned rooms.
Personal Connections to History
The visit proved particularly memorable for some members. Ken Thomas presented his late father’s records of burials at Sithney Church, dating back to the 1930s, to the archives. Another member, Reuben Long, found a photograph of himself in one of the centre’s books. The image depicted him acting as a ‘stickler’ (referee) in a Cornish wrestling match, adding a personal touch to the historical exploration.

Sweet Treats and Brain Teasers
After their informative tour, the group gathered in the centre’s café to enjoy teas, coffees, and an assortment of sweet treats. Monthly puzzle sheets were also distributed, providing members with fun challenges to take home.
Upcoming Event: Coffee Morning
The Oddfellows Friendship Group invites everyone to join their upcoming coffee morning on Saturday, 29th June 2024, from 10:30 am until 12 noon at the Oddfellows Hall, 49 Green Lane, Redruth TR15 1LL. The Oddfellows, a friendly society founded in 1810, welcomes new members of all ages and genders, meeting regularly in Plymouth, Truro, Redruth, and other locations.
This recent outing to Kresen Kernow was declared a great success, offering a delightful mix of fellowship, history, and fun for all who attended.
