Coastal Rescue Operation Saves Chocolate Labrador in Portmellon
In a daring coastal rescue operation on the 29th of March, emergency services were called into action following reports of a dog, a Chocolate Labrador named Bob, who had fallen approximately 70 feet down a cliff into the rocky shores below in Portmellon.
The incident prompted a swift response from both the St Austell Coastguard and the Mevagissey Coastguard, highlighting the risks dogs face near cliff areas and the importance of keeping them secured.
Swift Response to Emergency
The alarm was raised at 15:59 hrs, mobilising teams from the surrounding areas. Upon arrival, the rescue teams were greeted by Bob’s anxious owners, who directed them to the precarious location where Bob had landed. Miraculously, despite the significant fall, Bob appeared to be uninjured, awaiting rescue amidst the rocks.
Coordinated Rescue Efforts
Understanding the urgency and the potential risks involved in such a rescue, a plan was quickly devised. The Fowey Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) was called upon to assist in retrieving Bob from his perilous position. While preparations were made for a cliff rescue as a precautionary measure, in case the lifeboat needed to be redirected or if any crew member faced difficulties, the RNLI crew promptly launched their Y-boat from the All-Weather Lifeboat (ALB), ensuring Bob’s safe return to shore.
Bob’s Safe Return
The operation concluded successfully without further incident. The RNLI crew’s swift action allowed for Bob’s safe retrieval, after which he was handed back to his relieved owners. They were advised to take him to the vets for a thorough check-up to ensure no injuries had been overlooked in the initial assessment.
A Reminder for Dog Owners
This incident serves as a crucial reminder to dog owners about the dangers of allowing dogs to roam freely near cliffs. The coastguards’ timely response and the RNLI’s support were instrumental in ensuring a happy ending to what could have been a tragic event. The community is reminded that in case of any coastal emergency, contacting the coastguard via 999 is the recommended course of action.
This successful rescue operation not only demonstrates the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts between different rescue teams but also underscores the need for vigilance and safety measures when enjoying scenic coastal areas with dogs.
