Porthleven Chippy Recognised Among Top Newcomers

The Catch, a popular fish and chip shop in Porthleven, has earned a place as a finalist for the coveted Peter Hill Award 2024. This accolade, launched by Middleton Foods in memory of their late CEO Peter Hill, celebrates excellence and emerging talent in the fish and chip industry.

Ryan Baker, Sales Manager at Middleton Foods, expressed his delight at the announcement, saying:
“Huge congratulations to The Catch on being recognised as one of this year’s finalists! We launched The Peter Hill Award last year in memory of our great friend and CEO, Peter Hill and following its tremendous success, we decided to bring it back – even bigger than before. We have received a fantastic number of entries, and we are delighted to continue recognising more newcomers to the industry, encourage new talent, promote quality and excellence and give something back to the trade.”

A Family Dream Realised

For owners Barry and Naomi Clark, being named a finalist is the culmination of years of dedication to the restaurant trade. Barry shared how much the recognition means to their family-run business:
“It means so much to us all at The Catch to be a finalist in The Peter Hill Award 2024. My wife, Naomi, and I have been in the restaurant trade for more than 25 years and always dreamed of owning our own fish and chip shop. Ryan Jennings has been by our side from the age of 15 as our dish boy and now, 14 years on, oversees the running of The Catch. It is very much a family business – our son Jake, together with Dennis Curry, manages the shop day-to-day; whilst our daughter, Amelia is front of house and ensures our customers are well looked after. Winning The Peter Hill Award would mean the world to us, especially as we plan to open another Catch in the future.”

What’s Next?

The final stage of judging involves a visit from Nikki Williams, Field Sales Manager at KFE, to assess the shortlisted candidates. The winner, along with the runners-up, will be announced by the end of November.

The winner will receive a prize package valued at over £15,000, including £1,000 worth of Middleton Foods stock, a bespoke batter mix design, training courses, and tickets to the Fish & Chip Shop of the Year Awards 2025. Runners-up will also be rewarded, with prizes such as training sessions and stock supplies.

A Legacy to Peter Hill

The Peter Hill Award was created to honour the legacy of Middleton Foods’ late CEO and reflect his passion for the fish and chip industry. Ryan emphasised how the award aims to uphold Peter’s memory while fostering excellence within the trade.

Middleton Foods is a family-owned manufacturer of foodservice pre-mixes based in the UK. For more details about the award, visit Middleton Foods or contact them on +44 (0)1902 608122.
