Major Environmental Upgrade Set to Enhance Porthleven’s Moors Recreation Ground

Published On: 9 May 2024Last Updated: 9 May 2024By

The serene landscape of Porthleven’s Moors Recreation Ground is set for a significant environmental enhancement starting Monday, 13th May.

The Environment Agency is spearheading a five-week project to construct an access track along Methleigh stream. This initiative aims to facilitate safe machinery access crucial for ongoing vegetation maintenance.

Scheduled Works and Public Access

The construction is scheduled to be completed within approximately five weeks, contingent on weather conditions. During the construction phase, the footbridge leading to the Moors will be closed to the public during work hours for safety reasons. However, it will remain open during evenings and weekends to ensure that residents and visitors can still enjoy the recreational area.

Ecological Considerations

In a proactive move to protect the local ecosystem, the Environment Agency is collaborating closely with an ecologist throughout the construction phase. This partnership focuses on minimising the impact on the local wildlife, including nesting birds, reptiles, amphibians, and other natural habitats that might be affected by the construction activities.

Biodiversity Enhancement

Upon the completion of the access track, the town council plans to undertake a replanting scheme alongside the new track. The proposed selection of species includes Hazel, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Holly, Grey Willow, and Guelder Rose. This effort is aimed at reintroducing and enhancing biodiversity along the newly constructed access route.

Community Impact

The Moors Recreation Ground serves as a vital green space for Porthleven’s residents and visitors. These enhancements will not only improve access for maintenance operations but also ensure the sustainability and enrichment of the local biodiversity, aligning with broader environmental preservation efforts in the region. Residents and users of the Moors are encouraged to stay informed of the progress through updates from the town council.
