Elderly Woman Rescued from Porthcurno Beach: Coastguards Spring into Action
Rescue Operation in the Midst of Summer Crowds
An elderly woman was rescued from Porthcurno Beach on Sunday afternoon after she fell and suffered severe pain. The incident occurred at 15:52 when the Lands End Coastguard Search & Rescue Team was called to assist the woman. Battling through heavy summer traffic, the rescue team managed to reach the beach, arriving just above the lifeguard station.
Upon arrival, the team collected their equipment and headed to the beach where the lifeguards were already attending to the woman. The Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team was also dispatched to assist with the situation.
On-the-Scene Treatment
The casualty had fallen onto the sand after standing up, causing her significant pain. The rescue teams conducted a thorough assessment of her condition, followed by the administration of pain relief provided by the RNLI Penwith Lifeguards.
To shield her from the increasing wind on the beach, the rescuers carefully placed the woman onto a stretcher and carried her to the nearby lifeguard hut. There, the woman was closely monitored while the best course of action was decided.
Family’s Decision and Conclusion of Rescue
After consulting with the rescue teams, the woman’s family decided that transporting her to the hospital in their own car would be the quickest and most comfortable option. They expressed their gratitude to the rescue teams for their efforts in ensuring the woman’s safety before departing for the hospital.
The rescue operation concluded just before 19:00, with both the Lands End and Penzance Coastguard teams returning to their stations.
A Grateful Gesture
In a heartwarming gesture, Smashed Tomato Pizza, a local business, provided free pizza to the rescuers as they packed away their equipment after the long and challenging carry from the beach. The teams were thankful for the treat, which provided a much-needed boost after the rescue.
The Lands End Coastguard Search & Rescue Team has extended their best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured woman.
