Can You Help? Volunteers Needed to Remove Invasive Plants at Porthcothan Bay
Dune Restoration Event This Thursday
Beach Guardian is calling for volunteers to join a dune restoration effort at Porthcothan Bay on Thursday, 27th February, from midday to 2pm. The event, organised in partnership with Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL), Cornwall National Landscape, and Making Space for Sand (MS4S), aims to remove invasive plant species that threaten the health of the sand dunes.
Why It Matters
The work is part of a broader effort to support Cornwall’s dune systems, facilitated through the Farming in Protected Landscapes programme. Environmental experts, including Cornwall Environmental Consultants and Cornwall Wildlife Trust, have identified non-native species affecting the natural marram grass, a key plant that helps stabilise the dunes.
One of the main targets for removal is Rosa Rugosa, an invasive species that can overtake native plants. Volunteers will be given tools, equipment, and training to help with the removal process.
Get Involved
Beach Guardian is providing all necessary equipment – anyone interested can simply turn up at midday and take part. The event is open to all, with no prior experience required.
