Trebarwith Strand Rescue: Non-Swimmers Swept Out to Sea on Inflatable
Port Isaac RNLI and Local Heroes Rush to the Rescue
Port Isaac RNLI was called into action at 2:57pm on Wednesday 30th April after alarming reports that three men had been washed out to sea at Trebarwith Strand.
The inshore lifeboat (ILB) launched immediately, heading straight to the scene. They were joined by Boscastle Coastguard, search and rescue helicopter Rescue 924, and local fishing vessel Maverick, all working swiftly to search for the missing men.
Safe Return Thanks to Surfer’s Quick Thinking
As the volunteer crew neared Dennis Point, reassuring news came through from Falmouth Coastguard – all three individuals had safely made it back to shore with help from a local surfer.
Despite the positive outcome, Port Isaac RNLI was requested to continue to Trebarwith to check on the group’s welfare and offer safety advice. A crew member went ashore and assessed the three men and the surfer who had assisted. Thankfully, everyone was found to be fit and well.
Inflatable Ring Leads to Dangerous Situation
It later emerged that the group, who were non-swimmers, had entered the water using an inflatable ring. As the tide turned and the swell increased, conditions deteriorated rapidly. The inflatable lifted and drifted away from shore, leaving the men stranded and unable to return due to the wind and current.
Boscastle Coastguard provided a safety briefing to the group, underlining the dangers of using inflatables in the sea.
“This Could Easily Have Ended in Tragedy”
Speaking after the incident, Port Isaac RNLI Helmsman Matthew Main warned of the risks:
“This could easily have ended in tragedy. Inflatable toys are designed for swimming pools—not the sea. If you’re heading to the coast, always visit a lifeguarded beach and stay between the red and yellow flags. If you’re not a confident swimmer, keep to ankle depth and never use inflatables in open water.”
Following the welfare checks and safety advice, the lifeboat crew was stood down and returned to station.
