Injured Walker Evacuated by Port Isaac RNLI at Bossiney Cove
In a swift and decisive response, the volunteer crew of Port Isaac RNLI carried out a medical evacuation at Bossiney Cove on Wednesday, 31st July, after a member of the public sustained a head injury. The incident occurred at approximately 12:48 PM, prompting an immediate launch of the lifeboat, Pride of Port Isaac, following a request from the coastguard.
Injury on the Coastal Path
The casualty, whose identity has not been disclosed, suffered a laceration to the head after slipping on the steps leading down to the picturesque but steep Bossiney Cove. The hot weather on the day compounded the situation, making the challenging coastal path an even more arduous route for the injured individual.
Boscastle Coastguard personnel were also present at the scene and provided initial casualty care. However, given the soaring temperatures and the difficulty of the terrain, it was quickly determined that evacuating the injured person by lifeboat would be the safest and fastest method to get them to further medical assistance.
Lifeboat Evacuation to Safety
Damien Bolton, Senior Helm at Port Isaac RNLI, explained the decision: “With temperatures soaring that day, the coastal path would have been a difficult route for someone injured. Our priority was the well-being of the casualty, and the fastest way to get them to further medical care was by lifeboat.”
The Pride of Port Isaac transported the casualty to Boscastle, where the individual was handed over to the coastguard team waiting for an ambulance.
Public Safety Reminder
The RNLI crew ensured that the casualty was safely transferred and received the necessary care. In light of this incident, the RNLI continues to remind the public to take extra precautions during hot weather, particularly when navigating challenging coastal areas.
This successful rescue highlights the critical role of the RNLI and coastguard teams in responding to emergencies along the coastline, especially under difficult weather conditions.
