Cows, Cliffs, and Close Calls: Port Isaac RNLI Responds to Two Emergency Shouts in One Evening

Published On: 31 July 2024Last Updated: 31 July 2024By

The volunteers of the Port Isaac RNLI lifeboat crew had an exceptionally busy evening on Sunday, 28th April, responding to two separate emergency shouts within just two hours. Both incidents took place along the dramatic coastline, highlighting the challenges faced by both the crew and those caught in perilous situations.

Cliffside Rescue at Trebarwith

The first call came at 8:43 pm, when Falmouth Coastguard tasked the RNLI crew to assist two people and a dog who were stranded halfway up a 200-foot cliff in an abandoned quarry at the northeast end of Trebarwith. The crew, battling the rising and falling waves at the cliff’s base, were unable to communicate verbally with the casualties due to the challenging conditions.

According to the first informant, a local fisherman, three individuals and their dog had been cut off by the tide and had subsequently climbed the cliff in a desperate attempt to avoid danger. The RNLI crew kept a close watch on the casualties and coordinated with Boscastle Coastguard, who were also dispatched to the scene. Through careful guidance, the coastguard was able to reach the stranded individuals, ensuring their safety before all teams were stood down.

The RNLI continues to remind the public of the importance of checking tide times, carrying a means of communication, and informing others of their plans when venturing out to coastal areas.

Flashlights and Farm Animals at Lobber Point

As the crew was making their way back to the station, a second shout came in just four miles from their return. This time, they were directed to Lobber Point in Port Isaac, where a flashing light had been spotted, indicating someone in distress. On arrival, the crew discovered a member of the public dangerously close to the cliff edge, surrounded by a dozen or so cows.

With daylight quickly fading, the RNLI crew used their spotlight to maintain visual contact with the individual until a farmer arrived. The farmer was able to move the cows safely away and escorted the person back to the village. With the situation under control, the crew returned to the station, where they cleaned, refuelled, and prepared the lifeboat for the next call.

These two incidents underscore the dedication and quick response of the Port Isaac RNLI volunteers, who stand ready to assist at a moment’s notice. The RNLI encourages all who visit coastal areas to stay aware of their surroundings and take necessary precautions to avoid getting into dangerous situations.
