Pool Students Choose Respect: Anti-Bullying Week Celebrations Promote Kindness

Published On: 18 November 2024Last Updated: 18 November 2024By

Pool Academy, part of the Athena Learning Trust, joined schools across the country to mark Anti-Bullying Week from 11th to 15th November. This year’s theme, ‘Choose Respect,’ focused on handling differences of opinion with dignity and avoiding bullying behaviours.

As part of the celebrations, students were encouraged to spread kindness by writing positive messages to their peers. Blank postcards were available for students to fill with compliments, words of encouragement, or uplifting thoughts. The completed cards were collected at reception and delivered to students during tutor time, brightening their day with thoughtful gestures.

Combating Bullying with Positive Behaviour

Pool Academy’s staff and trustees are dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students. Each year, students sign an anti-bullying contract, committing to help combat bullying. The academy also incorporates anti-bullying values into their tutor-time activities, Personal, Social and Health and Economic Education lessons, assemblies, and restorative justice practices.

Principal Nick Ward highlighted the academy’s efforts to address bullying, stating:
“I am glad that our young people and their parents report that bullying, and other forms of conflict, are dealt with really well at the academy. I want all our students to learn and work in a relaxed and secure atmosphere without fear of being bullied.

“At Pool Academy, we are really proud of our Red Button policy and the work that our anti-bullying team is doing to create a positive learning environment for all of our students.”

Innovative Reporting Mechanisms

The academy has introduced a ‘Red Button’ system, accessible on students’ iPads, allowing them to report any bullying behaviour they witness, hear about, or experience. Reports are investigated by the pastoral team, ensuring swift and appropriate action is taken.

According to Ofsted inspectors, pupils at Pool Academy feel safe and appreciate the strong pastoral support provided. Inspectors also noted the academy’s calm and focused classrooms, where a well-planned curriculum supports learning in a secure and positive atmosphere.

Core Values at the Heart of Learning

Pool Academy’s core values—aspiration, belonging, and respect—underpin its approach to education and student wellbeing. The academy strives to maintain the highest expectations for student conduct, fostering a climate where all students can thrive.
