Students Take Part in a Week of Activities to Support Well-being

Pool Academy, part of Athena Learning Trust, has been celebrating Children’s Mental Health Week with a packed schedule of activities aimed at promoting student well-being.

Organised by the children’s mental health charity Place2Be, the week focuses on raising awareness about mental health among young people. This year’s theme, Know Yourself, Grow Yourself, encourages self-awareness and personal growth.

Wellness Day Kicks Off the Week

The school launched its programme with Wellness Day on Monday, giving students the opportunity to explore self-care techniques and stress management strategies. Sessions included relaxation techniques, mindfulness exercises, and practical tips on balancing screen time.

Two special guests, Thomas from Newquay Calisthenics and Jack Burlison from Sala Newquay, worked with students struggling to manage their time and energy in class. Their movement therapy sessions helped with self-regulation, coordination, and emotional expression.

Recognising Young Carers

On Tuesday, the school focused on the challenges faced by young carers, raising awareness of their responsibilities and how peers can support them. During break time, young carers were invited to the conference room to enjoy a hot chocolate as a small token of appreciation for their dedication.

The Power of Gratitude

Wednesday’s sessions encouraged students to reflect on the positive aspects of their lives through group discussions, writing exercises, and creative projects. The school believes that focusing on gratitude can help build resilience and improve happiness.

Supporting Boys’ Mental Health

Thursday’s sessions shifted focus to boys’ mental health, with support from Pentreath, an award-winning Cornwall-based mental health charity. Students explored topics such as managing emotions, building resilience, and tackling the stigma surrounding mental health.

The Importance of School Attendance

Throughout the week, the school also highlighted how regular attendance supports mental well-being. Staff emphasised that attending school consistently helps students build routines, form relationships, and stay engaged with learning—key factors in fostering a sense of belonging and resilience.

A Commitment to Student Well-being

Principal Nick Ward said:

“At Pool Academy, we are dedicated to promoting the mental well-being of every student. By raising awareness and providing valuable tools for managing life’s challenges, we strive to create a positive and supportive school environment where all students can thrive.”

The school’s core values—aspiration, belonging, and respect—guide its approach to student welfare. Ofsted inspectors have previously noted that students feel safe at the school and appreciate the strong pastoral support available.

With a focus on mental well-being and personal growth, Pool Academy’s activities this week have encouraged students to take an active role in their own self-care and resilience.
