Pool Academy Students Visit Bodmin Jail and Restormel Castle as Part of History Curriculum
Year 9 students from Pool Academy take on jail labour and castle ramparts on immersive history trip
Year 9 students from Pool Academy, part of Athena Learning Trust, have stepped out of the classroom and into Cornwall’s past with a full-day educational visit to Bodmin Jail and Restormel Castle.
The trip ties into the students’ current topic, ‘Prisons and Policing’, which explores how the British prison system has developed over time, from brutal early gaols to the more structured regime seen in modern institutions such as Pentonville.
Life Behind Bars at Bodmin Jail
The visit to Bodmin Jail gave students a first-hand look at the grim realities of historical incarceration. They learned about local crimes including highway robbery and arson, experienced the harsh punishments once handed out, and explored the daily toil of prison labour such as oakum picking and walking the treadmill.
Students even had the chance to try out the infamous crank, a device once used as a form of punishment requiring prisoners to turn a heavy handle hundreds of times each day.
Stepping into the Past at Restormel Castle
In the afternoon, the group travelled to Restormel Castle, a classic medieval Motte and Bailey stronghold near Lostwithiel. Students explored the remains of the castle, walked the moat, scaled the ramparts, and imagined life within its circular walls centuries ago.
Both visits provided an opportunity to bring classroom topics to life, combining physical activity with real-world exploration of Cornwall’s historical landmarks.
A Curriculum That Connects
At Pool Academy, the history curriculum aims to inspire curiosity and encourage students to think critically about the past. Through topics like ‘Prisons and Policing’, students build a broader understanding of historical complexity, social change and diverse perspectives.
Principal Nick Ward said:
“This trip was a fantastic opportunity for our students to engage with history beyond the classroom. Exploring Bodmin Jail and Restormel Castle helped them connect what they’ve been learning with real-life locations and experiences. At Pool Academy, we want every student to be inspired by the past, and this kind of hands-on learning is a powerful way to deepen understanding and build confidence.”
Values at the Core
Pool Academy places aspiration, belonging and respect at the heart of student life. According to Ofsted, pupils feel safe and benefit from strong pastoral support, calm classrooms, and a well-planned curriculum.
