Year 11 Students Celebrate Hard Work with a Unique Experience

Year 11 students from Pool Academy, part of Athena Learning Trust, recently swapped their textbooks for golf clubs during a rewarding trip to Hayle Driving Range. The visit was a well-earned treat for students who attended at least ten Champion Hour sessions in a half-term—a dedicated after-school programme designed to help with homework and revision.

The 300-yard-long driving range, complete with floodlit targets and high-quality equipment, provided a new and exciting challenge for the students. For many, it was their first time trying golf, and their reactions reflected the fun and novelty of the experience.

One student shared, “I very much enjoyed the trip. Golfing is something that I’ve seen around but never attempted. Now I think it’s going on my hobby list.” Another said, “It was a great experience, and it was really fun to be a part of a lovely reward with my friends.” A third student added, “It was a new experience that challenged me in all aspects while having fun at the same time.”

Champion Hour: Supporting Academic Success

Champion Hour, held from 4 to 5 p.m. each school day, offers students extra time to focus on their studies before heading home. The after-school sessions are part of Pool Academy’s broader commitment to fostering aspiration, belonging, and respect among its students, in line with the values of Athena Learning Trust.

Nick Ward, Principal at Pool Academy, praised the students’ dedication:
“I’m delighted that so many of our students are committing to Champion Hour sessions. It’s fantastic to reward their dedication, especially with the GCSE exams on the horizon.

“These trips not only motivate our learners but also give them the chance to explore activities they might never have considered before, helping them develop a broader set of skills and interests.”

Developing Skills Beyond the Classroom

All but one of the participating students had never played golf before, making the trip a true first for most. Beyond being a reward, the trip offered an opportunity to learn a new skill, connect with peers, and build confidence in a fun and supportive setting.

Pool Academy, as part of Athena Learning Trust, continues to stand out with its emphasis on creating a safe, respectful, and aspirational environment. Ofsted inspectors have noted that pupils at the school benefit from strong pastoral support, calm and quiet classrooms, and a well-planned curriculum.
