Pool Academy Students Hear Holocaust Survivor’s Harrowing Story
Auschwitz Liberation Anniversary Marked with Powerful Webcast
In the lead-up to Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January, students at Pool Academy, part of Athena Learning Trust, took part in a series of assemblies and a live seminar to reflect on the atrocities of the Holocaust. This year’s commemorations held extra significance as they marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
Learning About Justice After the Holocaust
The assemblies focused on the pursuit of justice following the Holocaust, teaching students about the efforts made to hold perpetrators accountable. They learned about the early attempts to track down those responsible for mass killings even before the war had ended. The discussions also highlighted how senior Nazi figures were given fair trials at Nuremberg, with legal representation, to prevent any claims of bias or injustice.

Survivor Mala Tribich Shares Her Story
The week’s commemorations culminated in a live webcast with Holocaust survivor Mala Tribich MBE. Fifteen Year 9 students had the privilege of hearing Mala’s personal testimony, as she recounted her experiences as a young girl living under Nazi rule in Poland and the horrors she endured at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at just 12 years old.
Not only did students listen to her powerful story, but they also had the opportunity to ask her questions, deepening their understanding of this dark chapter in history.
Heartfelt Letters from Pool Academy Students
Moved by what they had learned, some students wrote letters to Mala, thanking her for sharing her testimony and reflecting on the impact it had on them.
Nick Ward, Principal at Pool Academy, praised the students for their thoughtful engagement:
“Our students have shown incredible maturity in reflecting on such a difficult but vital part of history. The opportunity to hear from a survivor like Mala Tribich is one that will leave a lasting impact, and I am proud of the thoughtful questions and letters our students have written. It is so important that we continue to teach the lessons of the Holocaust and ensure that these stories are never forgotten.”
Pool Academy’s Commitment to Learning and Respect
At Pool Academy, aspiration, belonging, and respect are at the heart of everything they do. The school sets high expectations for students, both in their academic achievements and their conduct.
Ofsted inspectors have recognised the school’s strong pastoral support, stating:
“Pupils feel safe at school and value the strong pastoral support they receive. The morning greeting helps pupils to have a positive start to the day. Pupils learn in quiet and calm classrooms, from a well-planned curriculum.”
By engaging in meaningful commemorations like these, Pool Academy ensures that students not only learn about history but also understand its lasting lessons.
