Year 9 students take part in real-world careers morning

Year 9 students at Pool Academy, part of Athena Learning Trust, were given a real taste of working life this month during a busy and engaging Business Breakfast event.

Held earlier in July, the morning brought together six local businesses and two colleges for an energetic session packed with career discussions, networking, and insight into life beyond the classroom.

Local professionals inspire the next generation

The event saw students speaking directly with representatives from:

  • Kehelland Trust

  • Truro and Penwith College

  • Shore Asset Finance

  • Brooks Financial Planning

  • RG Kellow

  • The Business Supplies Group

  • Cornwall College

  • Life Star Medical

With guidance and advice on offer, students showed curiosity and confidence throughout the event, asking thoughtful questions and exploring a range of future career paths. Many left feeling more focused and excited about their next steps.

Connecting classroom learning to future careers

Principal Nick Ward said:

“The Business Breakfast was a brilliant success, our students really rose to the occasion. It’s so important they get these opportunities to connect classroom learning to real-world futures, and we’re incredibly grateful to our guests for helping to make it such a valuable experience.”

The school extended its thanks to all the visitors who gave their time to speak with the students, emphasising the importance of these partnerships in helping young people prepare for life after school.

Values at the core of the school’s approach

Pool Academy places aspiration, belonging, and respect at the centre of everything it does, with high expectations for both achievement and student conduct.

A recent Ofsted report noted that pupils feel safe at school, benefit from strong pastoral support, and enjoy calm classrooms where they learn from a well-planned curriculum.
