Helen Glover shares heartfelt words with Year 11s at Pool Academy

Students at Pool Academy in Cornwall were given an unexpected lift ahead of their GCSE exams when Olympic rower and proud Cornishwoman Helen Glover sent them a personal message of encouragement.

The double Olympic champion recorded a video especially for Year 11s at the academy, which is part of the Athena Learning Trust. In the message, Helen urged students to believe in themselves and trust the preparation they’ve put in.

“Believe in yourselves,” says Helen

Known for her gold medal wins and strong Cornish roots, Helen’s message came at a crucial time as students gear up for one of the most important moments in their education so far. Her words were described as both motivating and timely.

Nick Ward, Principal at Pool Academy, said:
“We are incredibly grateful to Helen for taking the time to support our students. Her message truly resonated with our Year 11s. To hear such encouragement from a world-class athlete and someone with deep Cornish roots really inspired them to stay focused and positive. We are proud of every single one of them as they begin their exams.”

Core values and a calm environment

Pool Academy places a strong emphasis on aspiration, belonging and respect. These values underpin every aspect of school life, with high expectations for student behaviour and a commitment to helping all learners succeed.

Ofsted inspectors noted that pupils at the school feel safe and benefit from strong pastoral support. A positive morning greeting helps set the tone for the day, and classrooms are described as calm, with learning based on a well-planned curriculum.

Big support for a big moment

Helen’s encouragement aligns with Pool Academy’s focus on building confidence and resilience. Her support serves as a powerful reminder that with hard work and belief in themselves, students can overcome challenges and achieve great things.

As Year 11s across Cornwall begin their exams this week, Pool Academy’s students are going into them with a boost from one of the county’s most successful sportswomen.
