Last Ever Broadcast? Cornwall Students Make Radio History in Studio Farewell

Final recording at Greatest Hits Radio captured by Pool Academy pupils

Year 7 students from Pool Academy have made a mark in local broadcasting history after becoming the last voices ever recorded in the current Greatest Hits Radio studio, formerly Pirate FM.

During a special visit, the students recorded a radio advert to promote the school’s upcoming Open Evening, which takes place on 25th September. The session was intended to give the young students a taste of life behind the microphone, but ended up being a moment they’ll never forget.

Behind the Mic at a Cornwall Landmark

The visit gave the students exclusive access to the now-iconic studio, which is being relocated to a new national base. As part of the experience, they were treated to Greatest Hits Radio merchandise and got to see first-hand how professional radio adverts are put together.

According to Nick Ward, Principal at Pool Academy, “Our students were absolute stars. To take part in something so unique and represent the school so brilliantly was a real honour. We’re incredibly proud of how they conducted themselves and we can’t wait for everyone to hear their voices on the radio this summer!”

Advert Airing This Summer

The students’ advert will be broadcast across Greatest Hits Radio throughout the summer, encouraging local families to attend the Pool Academy Open Evening later this year.

The school, which is part of the Athena Learning Trust, says its core values of aspiration, belonging and respect are central to school life. Ofsted inspectors noted that pupils feel safe and supported, and benefit from calm, well-structured classrooms and a strong curriculum.
