Fire Crews Respond to Late-Night Bin Blaze at Polzeath Beach Car Park
Last night, at 22:45, Wadebridge Community Fire Station was called to Polzeath Beach Car Park after reports of a bin fire. Upon arrival, the fire crew found that members of the public had already taken action, using sand to smother the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further. The fire service completed the job, using a hose reel jet to fully extinguish the fire.
Disposable Barbecue Blamed for Blaze
The cause of the fire was traced back to a single-use barbecue that had been disposed of incorrectly. The fire crew’s quick response and the public’s timely intervention prevented what could have been a more serious incident.
Fire Service Issues Urgent Warning
Following the incident, the fire station emphasised the importance of proper disposal of disposable barbecues to prevent similar fires in the future. They provided the following safety guidelines:
- Never leave a barbecue unattended.
- Ensure the barbecue has completely cooled down before moving it, preferably by using water or sand.
- Dispose of it responsibly in the bins provided or take it home.
- Never bury a barbecue in the sand.
Wadebridge Community Fire Station concluded with a simple reminder to all beachgoers: Cool it, Clear it, Bin it!
This incident highlights the potential dangers of improperly discarded barbecues, particularly in public spaces like beaches. The Wadebridge Community Fire Station hopes that by raising awareness, future incidents can be avoided.
