Critical Decision Looms! Carlyon Bay Residents’ Vote Can Shape the Future!

Published On: 7 January 2024Last Updated: 7 January 2024By

On January 18, Carlyon Bay residents hold the power to influence their community’s destiny as Carlyon Parish Council calls for an essential referendum.

Brend Hotel Group’s Ambitions

The renowned Brend Hotel Group, owners of the prestigious Carlyon Bay Hotel, has embarked on a journey to revamp the almost century-old establishment. Seeking pre-application advice from Cornwall Council, they aim to modernise the iconic hotel to meet contemporary tourism demands, with a dream of achieving five-star status.

Eco-Lodges on the Horizon

As part of their ambitious plans, the Brend Hotel Group intends to construct seven eco-lodges with captivating sea views along Carlyon Bay’s Sea Road. This land currently leased by the hotel to Carlyon Parish Council until the end of 2026.

Community Concerns

In December 2022, Carlyon Parish Council encountered the hotel’s expansion plans. With the neighborhood development plan still in draft form, the council initiated additional consultations with residents. Notably, 62 percent of residents expressed their opposition to the hotel’s proposal to use the green land, emphasising the local community’s attachment to this cherished space.

Neighborhood Planning Efforts

Since 2016, Carlyon Parish Council and residents have been diligently crafting a neighborhood plan designed to exert control over future development in Tregrehan Mills and Carlyon Bay.

The Referendum Question

The looming referendum poses a critical question to registered voters: Should Cornwall Council employ the agreed Carlyon Parish Neighbourhood Plan as a guiding document for future planning application decisions?

Voter Information

All eligible voters in the designated area will receive a poll card via mail from Cornwall Council, outlining when and where to cast their vote.

Public Engagement

To facilitate public engagement, Carlyon Parish Council has scheduled a public Q&A session during its forthcoming meeting at Tregrehan Chapel on Tuesday, January 16, beginning at 6 pm.

Community Impact

This vote’s outcome holds tremendous significance for Carlyon Bay, as it has the potential to determine the fate of the proposed eco chalets in the West Crinnis Field, adjacent to the Carlyon Bay Hotel, with planning permission hinging on the referendum’s outcome.

Accessing the Neighborhood Plan

For residents seeking to delve into the comprehensive neighborhood plan, the document can be accessed in its entirety at www.carlyon-pc.gov.uk. Alternative format inquiries can be directed to the clerk at 07983 710385.

Your vote wields the power to shape Carlyon Bay’s future. Make your voice heard and be part of the community’s destiny!
