Community Outcry Against Proposed Holiday Park Development at Penhale Camp, Holywell Bay

A wave of local dissent is rising in response to the proposed development of a holiday park at Penhale Camp in Holywell Bay, Newquay, Cornwall.

The contentious plan, identified as application PA22/02896, calls for the partial demolition of existing buildings to make way for short stay holiday accommodations and various leisure facilities. While the development promises economic benefits and revitalisation, it has sparked significant opposition from the community and environmentalists.

The project, which includes extensive landscaping, access improvements, parking, drainage, and other services, has been met with scepticism and concern by local residents, prominently voiced on the Friends of Penhale Facebook group. Members of the group have been vocal about their apprehensions regarding the environmental impact and strain on local infrastructure. Drawing on experiences from similar campaigns against developments in other areas, they suggest a coordinated approach involving local councils, environmental trusts, and media outreach.

One community member highlighted the importance of leveraging public opinion and media coverage to influence decision-makers, reflecting on past successes in halting similar developments. The strategy includes potential demonstrations and engaging with wildlife trusts to underscore the ecological implications of the project.

Another resident expressed dismay at the ongoing commercial exploitation of Cornwall’s coast, criticising the apparent disregard for the environmental and cultural value of the region. The development poses a threat to ecologically sensitive areas, including Sites of Special Scientific Interest and World Heritage Sites, according to this viewpoint.

Concerns were also raised about the visual impact of the development and its incongruity with the natural landscape. The unspoiled views from Holywell beach, currently free from modern constructions, could be significantly altered. Additionally, the area’s existing traffic and parking challenges are seen as inadequately addressed in the development plans.

Despite the potential for economic growth and tourism enhancement, the proposal has struck a chord with locals who are prepared to take significant measures to protect their beloved coastline. This dispute highlights the ongoing struggle to balance development with environmental and cultural preservation, a topic that is becoming increasingly relevant along Cornwall’s famed coast. The resolution of this issue will likely set an important precedent for future developments in the region.
