New Veterinary Prescription Rules Introduced by the RCVS
In a significant update to veterinary prescription practices, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has instituted new rules regarding the prescribing of antiparasitic medications, including treatments for fleas and worms. Effective from 13th January, these changes mandate that all pets must undergo a physical examination by a veterinarian before any such medications can be prescribed.
The RCVS’s revised regulations aim to ensure that pets receive the most appropriate care and treatment by requiring a thorough health assessment before the dispensation of antiparasitics. Following the completion of a physical examination, veterinarians can now add a prescription to a pet’s record during the consultation. This adjustment will enable the dispensation of flea and worm treatment for a period of up to 12 months.
Medivet Redruth, a veterinary clinic, has announced its compliance with the new guidelines and is in the process of contacting pet owners to arrange physical examinations for their pets. This proactive approach will facilitate the addition of prescriptions to pets’ records, ensuring that pet owners can conveniently obtain necessary antiparasitic treatments.
The clinic’s team is prepared to assist pet owners through this transition and emphasises the importance of adhering to these new prescribing rules for the health and well-being of pets. Pet owners are encouraged to cooperate with the upcoming calls from the clinic to schedule appointments, ensuring their pets remain protected against parasites throughout the year.
