Perranporth’s fire crew were called to the beach early on Saturday 21st June after a bin caught fire. The fire, reported at 6:33am, was caused by carelessly discarded barbecue charcoals.

Perranporth Community Fire Station shared details of the incident in a Facebook post yesterday morning, Saturday 21st June at 09:25, reminding beachgoers to stay safe as barbecue season begins.

Fire appliance deployed across the sand

The crew used their 4×4 pumping appliance to reach the fire on the sand. Once in position, they tackled the flames using one hose reel jet and quickly extinguished the bin fire.

According to the station’s post, the fire was started by hot coals that had not been properly put out. The team warned of the dangers of burying disposable barbecues or coals in the sand, as they can remain dangerously hot for hours.

Fire safety advice for beachgoers

The fire service is urging everyone to follow some simple precautions:

  • Never leave your barbecue unattended

  • Never bury disposable barbecues in the sand

  • Always fully extinguish and cool barbecues before disposing of them

Their message was clear: “Barbecue season is here – stay fire safe wherever you are!”
