Discover How Beach Litter Turns Into Kayaks and Reusable Cups in Perranporth!

Published On: 17 April 2024Last Updated: 17 April 2024By

In an inspiring display of environmental stewardship, the Perranporth Marine Conservation Group has proudly announced the latest collection and recycling efforts from their dedicated beach cleaners.

These local heroes have been instrumental in transforming discarded marine plastic and other materials from Perranporth Beach into valuable reusable items, including kayaks and coffee cups.

A Cleaner Beach and a Brighter Future

Thanks to the tireless efforts of both individuals and volunteers from the P.A.C.E. team (Perranzabuloe Action for Climate Emergency), the community has seen a significant reduction in beach litter which not only enhances the coastal beauty but also safeguards local wildlife. The collected items are meticulously sorted, cleaned, and dispatched for recycling, demonstrating a proactive approach to environmental conservation.

Recycling Made Simple

Perranporth Marine Conservation Group has provided straightforward guidance for beach-goers who wish to contribute to these recycling efforts. The main recycling crate is divided into two sections; one for hard plastics and another for fishing line and nets. A request has been made for people to take the time to separate rubbish in to the appropriate section. They have also emphasised the importance of removing any organic matter, such as seaweed—this should be returned to the beach—to facilitate the recycling process.

Unfortunately, not all materials can be recycled. The volunteers face challenges with items that contain metal, soft plastics like plastic bags, rubber items including dog’s tennis balls, and any polystyrene or fabric items such as socks or paddling shoes and windbreaks, which are not suitable for the recycling process. These guidelines aim to streamline the sorting process and ensure that only recyclable materials are collected.

Voluntary Efforts Leading the Way

The group’s beach cleaning operations are supported by the P.A.C.E. (Perranzabuloe Action for Climate Emergency)  team, who manage the bodyboard recycling crate. This particular crate is currently undergoing refurbishment to enhance its capacity for future recycling tasks. This initiative shows the community’s commitment to not only maintaining the aesthetic appeal of their beach but also their dedication to environmental sustainability.

Perranporth Marine Conservation Group extends heartfelt thanks to all the community members who have been part of this noble cause. The positive impact of these efforts is evident as recycled materials find new life in products such as kayaks, which may someday return to Perranporth in the form of innovative and sustainable products like Circular & Co’s reusable coffee cups.

Join the Effort!

The Group encourages more volunteers to join in these efforts. By adhering to the provided recycling tips, everyone can contribute to making Perranporth Beach a cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable place for everyone and help push the community closer to its sustainability goals. Whether it’s by separating plastics from nets or ensuring no unsuitable materials are thrown into the crate, every little effort counts towards a big change.
