What’s Happening in Penzance? Major Works to Transform Causewayhead Begin 6th January
Enhancements to Pedestrian and Cycling Access
Works aimed at improving pedestrian and cycling access at Causewayhead, Penzance, are set to commence on Monday, 6th January 2025. Funded by the Penzance Town Deal Sustainable Travel Network project, these improvements are part of a broader effort to create a fully sustainable network of safe and accessible walking, cycling, and green urban spaces. The project is being delivered by Cornwall Council in partnership with the Penzance Town Deal Board.
Addressing Challenges at Causewayhead
Currently considered an unattractive gateway into Penzance, Causewayhead suffers from issues like “rat running” and insufficient footways. Some pedestrian crossings have been deemed poorly placed. Following statutory consultations in 2024, changes were made to retain crossings as requested by the community.
The project will focus on enhancing walkways and cycling connectivity through improved crossings, increased footway space, and traffic calming measures. Additionally, the area will see new green spaces, planting, and seating, complementing the nearby Creative Cluster building.
Specific Upgrades
Key upgrades include:
- Wider Footways and Enhanced Paving: Existing footways will be widened, with new granite and tactile paving installed.
- Improved Crossings: The zebra crossing on St Clare Street will be upgraded, and a raised table crossing will be added at the Causewayhead-Clarence Street junction.
- Changes on Taroveor Road: The existing zebra crossing will be replaced with a build-out crossing point to shorten pedestrian crossing distances.
- Resurfacing and Landscaping: The carriageway will be fully resurfaced, pedestrian areas will receive decorative landscaping, and new street furniture, including benches and bicycle stands, will be installed.
Traffic Management During Construction
Cormac, responsible for the construction, will use three-way traffic lights to maintain safety for both workers and motorists. Access for residents, businesses, deliveries, and car parks will be maintained throughout.
Cormac project manager Tom James acknowledged the challenges:
“This is a busy area and, while we understand the importance of keeping the traffic flowing as well as possible at all times during the construction, we also need to ensure the safety of the teams working on site.
“We recognise that the works will inevitably cause some temporary disruption to motorists and will be monitoring the traffic closely to ensure traffic flows as smoothly as possible and delays are kept to a minimum.”
Completion and Contact Information
The final resurfacing and road markings will be carried out at night towards the end of the programme, requiring a full road closure. The works are expected to be completed by June 2025.

Other Projects in Penzance
The Causewayhead scheme is one of several projects underway in Penzance. Coinagehall Street is currently closed to traffic for redevelopment, with pedestrian access maintained. St Anthony’s car park is being remodelled, and a section of Quay Street is also closed.
Partners are coordinating these efforts to minimise disruption and ensure smooth progress across all projects.
