Unveiling of John le Carré’s Portrait Sets Stage for Memorial Lecture at Morrab Library
In a tribute to the late great author John le Carré, The Morrab Library, in collaboration with The Arts Society of West Cornwall (TASWC), is set to unveil a newly commissioned portrait during the inaugural John le Carré Memorial Lecture on Thursday, 2nd May.
This exclusive event, to be held at the Acorn Theatre in Penzance, will feature a reception for invited guests at the library situated within the scenic Morrab Gardens.
Artistic Tribute to a Literary Giant
The portrait, painted by Gary Long, captures John in impasto oils, a technique known for its texture and vivid colour depth. Gary, originally from Birmingham but a long-term resident of West Cornwall, has infused the work with his deep understanding of the Cornish landscape and its history—a nod to John’s own Cornish connections. This artistic endeavour was made possible through a substantial grant from the Patricia Fay Memorial Fund, under the auspices of the national Arts Society.
John le Carré’s Legacy
John le Carré, born David John Moore Cornwell, was not only celebrated for his espionage novels but also for his significant involvement with The Morrab Library. Living in St Buryan until his passing in 2020, John was a fervent supporter and former president of the library, often describing it as a “Cornish treasure house.” His commitment extended beyond roles, serving also as a patron and championing the cause of literacy and inspiration among the youth through this establishment.
Inaugural Lecture to Remember
Kicking off the biennial lecture series, the first lecture will spotlight Mick Herron, a renowned author famed for his ‘Slow Horses / Slough House’ series. The choice of Mick as the speaker underscores the thematic continuity of espionage—a genre both he and John have mastered. Anticipation for this lecture was evident as tickets were swiftly snapped up, promising a full house.
The Portrait’s Permanent Home
Once unveiled, the portrait will grace the walls of The Morrab Library as a permanent fixture, serving as an inspiration and a reminder of John’s literary and local contributions. The event not only celebrates his life and works but also ensures the continuation of the lecture series through the financial viability brought by the Patricia Fay Memorial Fund’s grant.
This harmonious blend of art, literature, and community spirit marks a significant moment for The Morrab Library and its patrons, promising to keep the legacy of John le Carré alive for generations to come. Be sure to pass through Morrab Gardens to witness this blend of artistic and literary homage in the heart of Penzance.
Join the Celebration
For those unable to attend the sold-out lecture, a visit to The Morrab Library to view Gary Long’s portrait offers a palpable connection to John le Carré’s enduring legacy. This event not only commemorates a literary icon but also enriches the cultural tapestry of Penzance through ongoing dialogues and artistic expressions centred around contemporary writing and historical narratives.
