On Sunday, 28th July, a speed boat with two passengers and a dog on board faced a dire situation east of Penzance Harbour. The vessel experienced engine failure, leaving it adrift and prompting the crew to fire a distress flare. Responding promptly to the emergency, the Penlee Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) ‘Mollie & Ivor Dent’ launched at 16:15 after receiving a tasking request from Falmouth Coastguard.

Swift Response and Rescue Operation

The Penlee ILB crew, launching immediately, reached the distressed vessel within ten minutes. Upon arrival, a quick assessment of the situation was carried out. Given the vessel’s drifting towards the shore, the crew determined that towing it to the nearest safe harbour was the safest option.

Towing to Safety

The Penlee ILB successfully towed the speed boat to Penzance Harbour, ensuring the safety of both passengers and their dog. Following the completion of the rescue operation, the lifeboat returned to Newlyn, where it was readied for its next service by 17:30.

This swift and effective response highlights the importance of quick action and coordination in maritime rescue operations. The successful rescue operation by the Penlee Inshore Lifeboat once again demonstrates their vital role in ensuring safety at sea.
