Royal Honours at Penlee Lifeboat Station: Volunteers Receive Coronation Medals
RNLI Penlee volunteers recognised for their service with Coronation Medals and long-service awards
Penlee RNLI volunteers gathered on Friday 13th December 2024 to receive Coronation Medals marking the coronation of King Charles III, who continues the royal tradition of supporting the RNLI.
Honouring Tradition
The tradition of royal patronage for the RNLI dates back to the charity’s founding 200 years ago in 1824 when King George IV became its first Patron. King Charles III has upheld this legacy, with the RNLI as one of the emergency services recognised through the distribution of Coronation Medals, commemorating his and Queen Camilla’s coronation on 6th May 2023.
Cornwall’s ties to lifesaving go back even further, with the first lifeboat purchased for Penzance in 1803, cementing the county’s long history of maritime rescue.
Celebrating Service
Alongside the presentation of Coronation Medals, the evening also saw long-service certificates awarded to two Penlee volunteers for their extraordinary contributions to the RNLI. Craig Neal, who has served 16 years as crew and deputy mechanic, was recognised for helping to save 41 lives. Ben Keogh received a certificate for his 19 years of service as crew, ILB Helmsman, and ALB Deputy Coxswain, during which he has saved 45 lives.
The event served as a powerful reminder of the dedication and bravery of those who work tirelessly to keep Cornwall’s waters safe.
