Poppies to Paddington: Penzance Wreaths Journey to London for Armistice Day Remembrance
The early hours of Armistice Day on Monday, 11th November, saw Penzance play a part in the Routes of Remembrance 2024 as the town joined a national act of remembrance. The 5.03am Great Western Railway (GWR) ‘Poppies to Paddington’ train departed from Penzance, carrying wreaths laid by community members, including Mayor of Penzance Stephen Reynolds and representatives from Armed Forces charities. This event marks another year of Routes of Remembrance, coordinated by The Veterans Charity, where wreaths are sent from across the UK to major cities for special remembrance services.
Journey of Remembrance Begins
The journey from Penzance station symbolises unity along one of Britain’s most iconic railway lines. Joined by other wreaths placed along the route, the Penzance wreaths made their way to London’s Paddington Station, arriving in time for an 11am service at the renowned Paddington Station War Memorial.
In his remarks, Stephen expressed gratitude, saying, “Poppies to Paddington is a wonderful initiative, bringing together all the communities on one of the world’s most famous railway lines in a symbolic act of remembrance. It’s an honour to take part, and huge thanks to The Veterans Charity, and the railway staff at GWR, for making it happen.”
Origins of Poppies to Paddington
Initially launched during the Covid pandemic in partnership with GWR, ‘Poppies to Paddington’ addressed the distress many veterans felt when restrictions prevented them from participating in remembrance events. Its success prompted The Veterans Charity to expand the effort into Routes of Remembrance, with wreaths now travelling by rail, ferry, and air across the UK. Each year, this programme brings symbols of remembrance to London and beyond, demonstrating respect for those who have served.
Local Remembrance Services Across Penzance
Sunday, 10th November, marked Remembrance Sunday, with a service at Penzance’s War Memorial at Battery Rocks organised by Penzance Council. Residents came together to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Similar services took place in Newlyn, Mousehole, Paul, Heamoor, and Gulval, each paying tribute to the community’s fallen. Penzance Council has extended thanks to all organisers and attendees who helped commemorate the day.
