Plans Submitted for New Park & Cycle Facility in Penzance – What’s in Store?

A major step has been taken in the development of a new Park & Cycle facility at Ponsandane in Penzance, with a formal planning application now submitted for approval.

Sustainable Travel Plans for Penzance

The proposed scheme is part of the Penzance Town Deal Sustainable Travel Network project, aiming to improve travel in and around the town by creating a safe and accessible network for walking, cycling, and green urban spaces. The project is being led by Cornwall Council in partnership with the Penzance Town Deal Board and Network Rail.

The facility is set to be built on disused land at Ponsandane sidings in Eastern Green, a 0.56-hectare site on the main approach road into Penzance. With easy access to the South West Coast Path, the Multi-Use Trail, and nearby bus stops within 200 metres, the aim is to encourage visitors and commuters to leave their cars behind and switch to greener travel options.

What’s in the Plans?

  • 62 car parking spaces, including 5 accessible spaces
  • 14 lockable cycle stands for secure bike storage
  • Drop-off area for two vehicles near the cycle stands
  • Upgraded pedestrian footbridge over the railway line with a wheeling channel for bikes
  • Widened footway along the A30 frontage for improved accessibility
  • Street lighting adjustments and new tactile crossing points
  • Underground ducting to support future electric vehicle charging
  • Green spaces with grassland, a species-rich hedge, and bird boxes

The planning application can be viewed on Cornwall Council’s online planning register here under reference PA25/01303.

A Boost for Sustainable Transport

The Penzance Sustainable Transport Network has received £3.5 million from the government’s Town Deal programme and an additional £3 million from Cornwall Council. This is part of a larger £21.5 million Town Deal, secured by Penzance Town Deal Board and Cornwall Council, aimed at regenerating the town and boosting the local economy.

Louis Gardner, Cornwall Council Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Economy, said:

“Ponsandane Park and Cycle is a great use of unused land to provide local commuters and visitors alike with a great cycling facility and is another example of how Penzance Town Deal is delivering greener transport options for everyone, into and around the town.”

If approved, this scheme could soon provide a new way for commuters and visitors to navigate Penzance more sustainably.
