Penzance Welcomes Newcomers to Roller Derby with Rapscallion Rollers’ Introductory Course
In a bid to spread the exhilaration of roller derby and broaden its community, the Rapscallion Rollers, based in Penzance, are inviting enthusiasts and curious minds to join their “Introduction to Roller Derby” course.
This 12-week journey into the heart of a rapidly growing full-contact sport begins on April 10th, offering participants a blend of fun, fitness, and camaraderie.
Roller Derby, known for its dynamic and strategic gameplay, pits two teams against each other on quad skates in a flat oval track. Each team’s Jammer scores points by lapping the pack, while blockers work defensively and offensively. The sport, celebrated for its inclusivity and ability to empower individuals, caters to a wide array of participants, including those interested in non-skating roles such as referees and coaches.
The course, running until June 26th at the Penzance Leisure Centre, aims to introduce participants to the fundamental skills, rules, and strategies of roller derby. More than just learning to skate, enrollees will experience the unique community spirit and teamwork that are the hallmarks of the sport. With sessions scheduled for Wednesdays from 18:45 to 21:00, the program is open to individuals over 18, regardless of their skating background.
For a fee of £85 with personal equipment, or £105 including kit hire, participants will have access to all necessary gear, including quad skates and protective equipment. The Rapscallion Rollers emphasise the sport’s accessibility and the role it plays in building confidence and fostering a sense of belonging.
Sarah, Co-chair of Cornwall Roller Derby, highlighted roller derby’s inclusive nature, saying, “It’s a sport that anyone can find their place in, it celebrates different body types. It is a strategic game of offence, defence, strength, and speed, there really is a place for everyone on the track”.
Rapscallion Rollers and their sister team cc are integral parts of Cornwall Roller Derby, a league that welcomes members of all genders over 18. Aside from competitive bouts, such as their participation in the national 5 Nations Roller Derby competition, the league is dedicated to promoting the sport, fostering community, and empowering members.
With limited spaces available, interested individuals are encouraged to register quickly by contacting the Rapscallion Rollers through Facebook or email. This course not only offers a chance to dive into an exciting sport but also to become part of a diverse and supportive community.
