Penzance East Ward By-Election: Key Dates, Candidates, and How to Vote

A by-election will be held on Thursday, 24 October 2024, to fill the current councillor vacancy for Penzance East Ward. The candidates announced for the seat are Andrew Law (Liberal Democrats), Maggie Uwaitse, and Mark Wilson (Independent). Residents in the area will soon receive notifications and voting forms through the post from Cornwall Council.

How to Vote

All registered residents of Penzance East Ward will receive their voting information and forms, including details of the designated polling station, via post. This by-election marks an important opportunity for locals to choose their representative, so making sure you’re registered to vote is crucial.

Register to Vote

If you are not already registered, you can register to vote online before the deadline, which is midnight on Tuesday, 8 October 2024. Don’t miss your chance to have a say in who represents you on the council.

Voter ID Requirements

New rules mean that voters in England now need to show photo ID at polling stations. This is an important change to be aware of before heading to vote in person. Accepted forms of photo ID include:

  • UK Passport or any from the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, a British Overseas Territory, an EEA state, or a Commonwealth country (including an Irish Passport Card)
  • UK driving licence, including provisional
  • Blue Badge
  • Older Person’s Bus Pass funded by the UK Government
  • Disabled Person’s Bus Pass funded by the UK Government
  • 60+ London Oyster Photocard funded by Transport for London
  • Freedom Pass
  • Identity card with the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (PASS card)
  • Biometric immigration document
  • Ministry of Defence Form 90 (Defence Identity Card)
  • National identity card issued by an EEA state
  • Electoral Identity Card issued in Northern Ireland
  • Voter Authority Certificate
  • Anonymous Elector’s Document

You will only need to show one form of photo ID. Remember, it needs to be the original version and not a photocopy.

Don’t Have an Accepted Form of Photo ID?

If you do not have an accepted form of photo ID, or if your current ID does not resemble you anymore, you can apply for a free voter ID document, known as a Voter Authority Certificate. This is especially useful if you’re concerned about using an existing form of ID for any reason, such as a change in your appearance or the use of a gender marker.

You need to be registered to vote before you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. The deadline for applying for a Voter Authority Certificate is 5pm on Wednesday, 16 October 2024. Make sure to apply for your Voter Authority Certificate if needed.
