Penzance Christmas Tree Went Up Just Ahead of Storm Bert
Penzance’s Christmas tree was erected just in time, ahead of the arrival of Storm Bert. The 25ft-high tree, grown in Cornwall and sourced from Santa Trees in Liskeard, was carefully secured in the town centre on Friday morning, 22nd November, before the Met Office’s yellow wind warning came into effect.
A Race Against Time
With the weather forecast predicting strong winds and potential disruption across southern England over the weekend, the team responsible for the installation seized a window of opportunity to get the tree in place. The tree was transported by A R Newport, with the assistance of Robin Hawkins from High Maintenance, and lifted into position using a crane. Penzance Council’s Leisure and Amenities team worked alongside the crew to ensure the tree was firmly secured.
Wooden chocks were used to stabilise the base of the trunk, and additional measures were taken to prepare for the high winds expected to batter the area during Storm Bert.
Lights to Follow Once Storm Passes
Amy Simons, Operations Officer at Penzance Council, explained why the tree remains undecorated for now:
“We haven’t put the lights up yet, because we’ve got Storm Bert coming in this weekend. We’re going to let the tree settle in, but we may have to come back on Monday morning to re-straighten it after the really high winds. And then, later on next week, we’ll put the Christmas lights up, all ready for the Penzance Christmas Lights Switch On next Saturday, 30 November.”
Met Office Issues Warning
With the storm hitting Cornwall over the weekend, the Met Office has warned of dangerous coastal conditions and potential disruption. Residents are urged to stay vigilant as the high winds make their way across southern England.
The Penzance Christmas tree will remain in place over the weekend to settle before the lights are installed next week, ensuring everything is ready for the festive celebrations on 30th November.
