Penzance Christmas Lights Sparkle as Harry Wade Flips the Switch

The festive season has officially arrived in Penzance, where crowds gathered on Saturday 30th November for the much-anticipated Christmas Lights Switch-On. This year’s ceremony brought a special touch of magic, as 10-year-old Harry Wade had the honour of lighting up the town.

A Festive Evening in Penzance

Organised by Penzance BID with support from Penzance Council, the event drew a large crowd to the town centre. Attendees gathered in front of the Christmas tree, located near the statue of Humphry Davy—now cheerfully adorned with a Santa hat.

The evening began with a local community choir performing Christmas carols, setting the mood for the countdown. Town crier Phil Northcott introduced the Mayor of Penzance, Stephen Reynolds, who invited the crowd to join in counting down to the official lighting moment at 5.15pm.

Harry Wade’s Winning Design

Harry Wade, a 10-year-old pupil from St Mary’s Catholic School, was this year’s special guest. Harry earned the privilege of pressing the plunger to illuminate the town after his design won the Mayor’s Christmas Card Competition. His artwork was chosen from 175 entries submitted for the contest.

Town Illuminations

As in previous years, Penzance Council coordinated the installation of the Christmas tree and the main suspended lights that brighten up the town centre.

This year’s switch-on marks the start of a festive season in Penzance, filled with holiday spirit and community cheer.
