Penzance Celebrates Local Heroes with Annual Citizens of the Year Awards
Penzance, a community known for its vibrant spirit and active volunteerism, is once again gearing up to celebrate its local heroes.
The town has announced the opening of nominations for the prestigious Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards 2024, marking a significant 21st anniversary of this cherished tradition.
The awards, named in memory of the late Brian Spiegelhalter, a former Mayor of Penzance and a revered community servant, seek to honour individuals who have significantly contributed to the local area. Brian, known for his dedication to the community through his service on the Penzance Town Council, left behind a legacy of compassion and commitment that continues to inspire.
Mark, reflecting on his father’s contributions, expressed pride in the awards’ role in recognising outstanding community members. “These awards aim to celebrate and perpetuate his legacy of kindness, compassion, and dedication to others,” he said.
Councillor Stephen Reynolds, the current Mayor of Penzance, highlighted the importance of acknowledging the unsung heroes who tirelessly work to make a difference. “In my time as Mayor, I’ve become aware of just how many people in our community – many of them unsung heroes – go the extra mile to help others, in so many ways,” he remarked.
The awards offer a platform to celebrate two individuals who have gone above and beyond in their contributions to the community, bringing them into the limelight during the Annual Mayor Choosing Ceremony. This event not only honours the winners but also shines a light on the vital role of volunteers in Penzance parish.
Nominations are now open for both the Citizen of the Year (aged 18 and over) and Young Citizen of the Year (aged under 18) categories. The community is encouraged to nominate individuals who have made noteworthy contributions through community service, volunteering, charity work, outstanding achievements, and local environmental action.
To ensure a fair and inclusive selection process, the awards will revert to a traditional nomination method, moving away from online voting. A panel comprising the Town Mayor, Deputy Town Mayor, Chairs of the Council’s Committees, and a representative of B.J. Spiegelhalter & Son, supported by the Town Clerk, will make the final decisions.
The closing date for nominations is set for 12 noon on Tuesday, 9 April 2024, with details and nomination forms available on the Penzance Council website and at the Council Offices.
The winners, once selected, will be celebrated at the Annual Town Council on Tuesday, 7th May at St John’s Hall, Penzance. They will receive their awards from the Town Mayor and be invited to a special Mayor’s Reception at The Exchange Gallery, Penzance, immediately following the ceremony.
As Penzance prepares to honour its heroes, the awards stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of community service and the profound impact individuals can have on their local area.
