Penlee Lifeboat Tows Disabled Fishing Vessel to Safety

The Penlee All Weather Lifeboat “Ivan Ellen” was launched at 20:46 on the evening of 31st July 2024 to assist a disabled 16-metre fishing vessel stranded 13 miles southwest of Newlyn. The fishing vessel, which had five crew members onboard, experienced engine failure, leaving it adrift in the open sea.

With no other vessels in the area able to provide help, Falmouth Coastguard quickly requested the launch of the Penlee Lifeboat. The lifeboat, under the command of coxswain Patch Harvey and a crew of six volunteers, reached the stricken vessel within 40 minutes.

Swift Action and a Safe Return

Upon arrival, Patch Harvey and his crew assessed the situation and decided that towing the crab fishing vessel back to Newlyn, its home port, was the safest course of action. Despite the potentially dangerous circumstances, the sea conditions were calm, allowing the crew to efficiently attach a tow line to the disabled vessel.

The operation was conducted smoothly, and by just before 01:00 on 1st August 2024, the fishing vessel was safely towed into Newlyn Harbour. This successful rescue marks the fourth time in just four days that the dedicated volunteer crew of the Penlee Lifeboat have been called to action.

Another Successful Mission for Penlee Lifeboat

The quick response and effective teamwork displayed by the Penlee Lifeboat crew ensured that the stranded fishermen were brought back to safety without further incident. Their commitment to the safety of those at sea is evident in their continued readiness to launch at a moment’s notice.

As of the time of reporting, the post detailing this operation was made 16 hours ago, highlighting yet another example of the vital role that lifeboat crews play in coastal communities.
