Penlee Lifeboat Crew Assists Diver with Suspected Decompression Sickness
Penlee RNLI volunteers race to help in suspected case of decompression sickness
A diver returning from a wreck near Wolf Rock Lighthouse collapsed next to the Penlee Lifeboat on Friday 4th July, suffering from suspected decompression sickness — also known as ‘the bends’.
The diver had been en route back to Newlyn when symptoms started to appear. Although the vessel’s skipper initially planned to transport the casualty to hospital, the situation escalated quickly. The diver collapsed on the pontoon beside the lifeboat.
Penlee volunteers leap into action
Three of Penlee’s RNLI volunteers acted immediately, providing urgent medical assistance on the scene. Falmouth Coastguard were alerted and tasked a Coastguard Search & Rescue helicopter to respond.
Due to the severity of the casualty’s condition, the dive vessel’s skipper made the decision to drive directly to Penzance Heliport, where the helicopter was due to land, rather than wait for an ambulance.
Two RNLI volunteers travelled with the casualty in the vehicle, continuing to administer care while also providing directions.
Transferred to specialist treatment in Plymouth
Upon arrival at Penzance Heliport, the casualty was transferred to the waiting helicopter and flown to DDRC Healthcare in Plymouth. The facility offers a 24/7 diving and hyperbaric medical emergency service.
