New Indoor Climbing Gym Set to Transform Former Poundstretchers Store in Penzance
In an exciting development for local fitness enthusiasts, Penzance councillors have given unanimous support to plans for a new indoor bouldering gym in the town centre. The proposed climbing facility will be housed in the former Poundstretchers store on Market Jew Street—a move that could breathe new life into the area.
However, the final decision now rests with Cornwall Council, which will determine whether the project gets the official go-ahead.
Council Backs Plans with No Objections
At a public Planning Committee meeting on 29 January 2025, councillors from Penzance Council reviewed the application submitted by Susan Stuart of Penzance Regeneration Company Limited. The proposal outlines a comprehensive renovation of the building, including:
- Thermal upgrades with insulated render on three elevations
- New windows on two elevations
- A two-storey extension
- A glazed rooflight
- Full interior fit-out to accommodate the bouldering gym
- Additional facilities, including a café and reception area
Following discussions, the Planning Committee unanimously supported the application, registering no objections to the plans.
What Happens Next?
While Penzance Council has given its backing, the project’s fate now rests with Cornwall Council, which serves as the local planning authority. They will conduct further reviews before making the final decision on whether construction can proceed.

A Boost for Local Fitness and Community Spaces
If approved, the bouldering gym would provide a new hub for climbing enthusiasts in Penzance, offering indoor climbing walls and training facilities in a central location. The addition of a café and reception area could also help revitalise Market Jew Street, attracting visitors and boosting footfall for nearby businesses.
Now, all eyes are on Cornwall Council’s final verdict. Will this new fitness destination get the green light? Penzance residents won’t have to wait too long to find out.
