A new gig boat, named in memory of Penzance & Newlyn Pilot Gig Club’s (PNPGC) founder, has been officially blessed – with a splash of Guinness.

A Lasting Tribute to Julie Saville

On Saturday, 1st March, PNPGC gathered at Penzance Harbour to honour Julie Saville, whose passion for gig rowing and dedication to the community shaped the club’s mission. Julie, who sadly passed away in 2024 following knee surgery, had founded the club in 2022 with the goal of making gig rowing accessible to all, regardless of age, gender, or ability.

Determined to continue her legacy, the club raised funds to acquire a gig boat in her memory. That vision became reality with the arrival of Myghternes an Morladron – Cornish for Queen of the Pirates – a striking black and red gig sourced from Ireland.

A Ceremony to Remember

Mayor of Penzance Stephen Reynolds addressed the crowd, reflecting on Julie’s impact and hinting that he might one day try gig rowing himself, before quickly shifting focus to thanking the assembled crew of Penlee Lifeboat for their service.

Rev Rebecca Fugill then led the blessing, sprinkling holy water on the boat and offering prayers for its future and those who will row in it. In a nod to the gig’s Irish origins, Penlee Lifeboat coxswain Patch Harvey poured a splash of Guinness onto the wooden hull, a moment that delighted the onlookers.

With Myghternes an Morladron now officially blessed, PNPGC continues its mission, ensuring Julie’s passion for gig rowing lives on.
