Miss the Meadery? Find the Classic Menu at The Old Lifeboat House in Penzance
A much-loved Penzance tradition has found a new home after 55 years. On Monday 21st April 2025, Penlee Lifeboat Coxswain Patch Harvey officially opened The Old Lifeboat House, the new venture from Jon and Emily Stephens – former proprietors of the Waterside Meadery.
The couple were forced to close the Meadery following lease issues, but the spirit of their famous chicken and chips lives on in their new venue on the wharf in Penzance.
A historic setting with lifeboat ties
The Old Lifeboat House, built in 1856 from Lamorna granite, now becomes the new home for the familiar menu. It’s a fitting location for Jon and Emily, who have long supported Penlee Lifeboat through fundraising efforts.
Emily became emotional while speaking to the crowd gathered for the opening, expressing her gratitude for the public’s backing:
“Jon and I have had from the public.”
Patch Harvey also praised the couple’s efforts:
“I am pleased to support The Old Lifeboat House where the Meadery menu will continue, and wish them well in their new venture.”
Preserving a piece of Penzance
Although the original lifeboat houses from 1856 and 1867 no longer stand, the 1884 boathouse remains. Located at the corner of Jennings Street and Wharf Road, it’s a single-storey structure made of coursed Lamorna granite, featuring RNLI roundels, a small bell turret, and terracotta detailing. It was granted listed building status in 1987 and now houses the restaurant.
The move not only ensures the legacy of the Meadery continues but also breathes new life into one of Penzance’s historic buildings.
