Final Countdown for Cold War Bunker Room – But Cornwall’s Zombie Pasty Apocalypse Is Just Beginning

Penzance escape room says goodbye to one game, and hello to infected pastries and moral panic

Escape Rooms Cornwall in Penzance is preparing to retire one of its longest-running and best-loved experiences – but a new game with a very Cornish twist is waiting in the wings.

The Cold War-themed Cabin Fever will welcome its final players on 22nd April 2025, closing the blast doors on a fan favourite that’s been part of the business since the early days. Set in a fictional underground bunker, the escape room has drawn teams of players for years with its retro tech and Cold War chaos.

But as one story ends, another – even stranger – begins.

Introducing ‘28 Pasties Later’

Launching this summer is 28 Pasties Later, a brand-new zombie-themed escape room set in a local corner shop during a bizarre outbreak caused by infected meat-filled pastries.

Players will need to work against the clock to solve puzzles, find clues and stop the mysterious infection from spreading across Cornwall.

“It’s our weird little love letter to the county and the zombie genre,” say the team. “There are nods to Shaun of the Dead, The Last of Us, Dawn of the Dead, Resident Evil, The Walking Dead – and even World War Z, which was partly filmed just up the road in Falmouth.”

Designed for ages 13 and up, the game promises immersive sets, dark humour, dramatic moments and the occasional scare. But this isn’t just your average escape room – decisions made during gameplay can change the outcome, making morality as important as logic.

Local talent helping bring the room to life

The new experience is being developed with support from students at Exeter University’s Penryn campus. They’ve been involved in designing and building custom props and tech to help bring the infected-pastry apocalypse to life.

Other games still running at Escape Rooms Cornwall

While Cabin Fever closes, Escape Rooms Cornwall continues to offer two other popular rooms at its Penzance site:

  • The Lamorna Brown Affair (7+): A fast-paced art heist where players attempt to steal a priceless painting. Think slick museum break-in with a fun twist.

  • Death by Prescription (13+): Set in a 1940s doctor’s office, this creepy, story-led room starts as a routine appointment and ends with players trying to escape before a suspicious GP returns.

Escape Rooms Cornwall is an independent, locally run business that caters to families, tourists, locals and team outings. In 2024, it was recognised by TripAdvisor as being in the top 10% of attractions worldwide, thanks to consistently high reviews and a strong focus on the player experience.
