Drop-in session at St John’s Hall to explain major roadworks

Residents and businesses in Penzance are being encouraged to attend a community drop-in session on Wednesday 18th June to learn more about a series of upcoming highways and utility works that will affect the town over the coming months.

The event is being held between 8am and 6pm at St John’s Hall, and will cover planned improvements to Market Jew Street as well as a wider programme of gas pipe upgrades by Wales & West Utilities.

Major upgrade for Market Jew Street

The works on Market Jew Street are part of the Penzance Town Deal Sustainable Travel Network project. Delivered by Cormac, the scheme aims to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and those using public transport. Plans include:

  • Reinforcing the pedestrian zone

  • Creating a more effective gateway

  • Improving access for people with reduced mobility

  • Enhancing planting and overall streetscape

Construction is currently due to start on 21st July and is expected to last up to 19 weeks, finishing by 28th November.

Road closures and traffic changes

To keep the public and work teams safe, Market Jew Street will be closed to traffic between 7.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, for the full duration of the works. A separate road closure on Market Place will run from 20th October to the end of November.

  • Roads will remain open during evenings and weekends

  • Access for emergency vehicles and pedestrians will be maintained at all times

  • Bus stops on Market Jew Street will be suspended, and diversion routes for buses are already in place

Gas pipe upgrades across town

Wales & West Utilities will also be carrying out gas pipe upgrades in several areas of Penzance, some requiring additional road closures. These are scheduled as follows:

  • St Clare Street: 24th July – 19th September

  • Station Road: 22nd September – 20th October

  • Market Place: 20th October – 1st December

More transport upgrades still to come

Further highways work under the Sustainable Travel Network is planned for September 2025, including:

  • Bus station and Branwells Gyratory

  • Ponsandane Cycle Hub

  • Market Place scheme

Minimising disruption

Cormac, Wales & West Utilities and the Sustainable Travel Network team will be at the 18th June drop-in to answer questions and explain traffic management arrangements. The organisations say they are working closely with Penzance Council and Penzance BID to ensure the town remains open for business.

Clear signage and diversions will be in place, and support is being offered to help businesses adjust delivery times and routes. The team say the aim is to finish the work before the start of the Christmas period.

Anyone with concerns or queries about the works can contact Cormac on 0300 1234 222 or email contracting@cormacltd.co.uk.

The Penzance Sustainable Travel Network has received £3.5 million from the government’s Town Deal programme, with an additional £3 million from Cornwall Council. The wider Penzance Town Deal is worth £21.5 million and is designed to help regenerate the town and support its local economy.
